The theory of shiatsu is based on the Chinese medicine five-element
system and its related meridians and pressure points. Shiatsu is an
effective and enjoyable massage that stimulates the body’s own
natural capabilities to restore balance. This promotes harmony in
the energy channels which can lead to an improvement in
well-being.
Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure”,
although I often use palms, elbows and sometime knees and feet. The
amount of pressure can vary a lot according to what the individual
needs at that time. There is a flow to the session and the person
receives what they need in that moment, usually giving attention to
the whole body and not just the problem area. Shiatsu can be both
deeply relaxing and/or invigorating.
"Thai massage" or "Thai yoga massage" is an
ancient healing system combining acupressure, stretching and
assisted yoga postures.
The recipient remains clothed
during a treatment and it is also carried out on a futon on the
floor. There is constant body contact between the giver and
receiver, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is
compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked.
What techniques
used during a treatment are adjusted to fit the receiver and what
their body requires.
Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet,
hands and ears. Reflexology is generally relaxing and may be an
effective way to alleviate stress.
The feet are under a
huge amount of strain every day carrying us around and therefore can
really benefit from being looked after.
Reflexology is
based on the belief that each part of the body is connected through
the nervous system to specific points on the hands and feet. Through
stimulating these reflex points, we can help energy flow and move
within the body. Foot massage can be deeply relaxing and can relieve
stress.
Shiatsu offers support through all the changes a pregnancy brings.
It can alleviate the sore muscles that accompany pregnanacy and can
help with maintaining a good posture
It can relieve
physical symptoms like heartburn, nausea and general aches and help
with posture.
It can also offer a safe space to process
the emotional aspects of becoming a mother.
I am a shiatsu masseuse with over 20 years experience living in
Berlin. Originally from Glasgow, I have an honors degree in
Complementary medicine and health sciences from Salford University,
where I also received my diploma in reflexology. I studied shiatsu
in Glasgow and became a teacher’s assistant for the following three
years.
I have combined my love of travelling with
regular courses in Thai massage in Thailand and south-east
Asia. After a life-changing massage I decided to make massage and
bodywork my life’s work.
A large part of my work is with
pregnant women. I feel that pre- and post-natal women can really
benefit from the support that shiatsu has to offer.
I run several group workshops each year, where I teach in English, the
principles of shiatsu massage.
We learn a routine and the
correct use of body weight, to learn to give a massage that is
comfortable for the giver and the receiver.
I also teach
private workshops for couples or friends who want to learn shiatsu. I
usually travel to your home and advise on the techniques that are best
for the receivers needs.
